RE-ART ONe

First international art exhibition for recyling art and design from Germany

First established in 2004

RE-ART ONe is the first international art exhibition that shows only art and design with a strong attitude towards recycling and waste. The exhibition first took place in the Hamburg area at the little village Ihlienworth near Cuxhaven next to German North Sea coast during summer holiday season. As it is a holiday region, there are many visitors from all over Europe with plenty of time to show around. Until now we had more than 30.000 visitors including many school classes from all type of schools.

RE-ART ONe shows today works of 50 artists, designer or craftsmen from 15 nations that are made by different waste materials like aluminium cans, scrap metal, plastic or paper waste. What makes it unique is the fact, that all artists work with their special materials since many years. The exhibition started in a former recycling works, that went bankrupt a couple of years ago and that became now an art exhibition hall. Together with IBO, an international volunteers organization we could manage this on a very low budget.

The first year the exhibition was sponsored by German federal environmental foundation and the BINGO! environmental foundation of lower Saxony. Its accompanied by a big pedagogic program to inspire children and young adults to care for waste as a renewable resource. It is supported by some members of federal and state parliaments and it is under the patronage of Hans Heinrich Sander Minister for the environment of Lower Saxony.

Our exhibition was in 2005 honored by UNESCO as an approved project in the decade of education towards sustainability. It became Germans National Contribution to world environment day 2005 at San Francisco. It was shipped and presented with the support of Hapag Lloyd Container Line and the German ministry of foreign affairs. After it returned to Germany it became the first art exhibition at the new German agency of the environment in Dessau near Berlin. Dessau is world famous city because the roots of the Bauhaus arts and design university are here.

After this 2006 RE-ART ONe was invited to United Nations Organization at Nairobi, Kenya. We got the main lobby for it. The opening ceremony was held by Prof. Dr. Klaus Toepfer on his last work day as an Executive Director of United Nations Environmental Programme together with Anna Tibijuka Executive Director of UN-habitat and Prof. Wngari Maathai, 2004 Kenyan Nobel Peace Winner. After three months it came back to Germany.

In 2008 the exhibition was invited to Dubai Summer Surprise Festival. The opening was honoured by the Minister for the Environment  of UAE H.E. Dr. Rashid Ahmed Bin Fahad and Vice Consul General of Germany Hans-Burkhart Sauerteig. With this exhibition we offered an ambitious art workshop program for children of all age that was a big success.
With six television stations, live reports by Radio Arabia and about a dozen press photographers we experienced the highest media attention ever for this unusal and inspiring art show.

The exhibition promotes the thought of sustainability in industrial societies, inspire industry and consumers to focus on good design and products made by recycling materials or with low waste output and low energy input. It was be a big media event during the last two years with reports in nation wide broadcasted radio and television.

The exhibition is organized by the non profit association of arts, health and education of Heidelberg, Germany. The surplus of the exhibition is used to promote and sponsor the exhibiting artists. Donations are very welcome.
